Poem Analysis of "A Dream" by Edgar Allan Poe
In visions of the dark night
I have dreamed of joy departed-
But a waking dream of life and light
Hath left me broken-hearted.
Ah! What is not a dream by day
To him whose eyes are cast
On things around him with a ray
Turned back upon the past?
That holy dream- that holy dream,
While all the world were chiding,
Hath cheered me as a lovely beam
A lonely spirit guiding.
What though that light, thro' storm and night,
So trembled from afar-
What could there be more purely bright
In Truth's day-star?
In this poem there is a lot of metaphorical speaking. “What is not a dream by day, To him whose eyes are cast, On things around him with a ray,” This quote seems to signify the idea that his dream was inclusive and included all the aspect of life, or at least this is how I have interpreted it. I believe that this also explains his perception of life by exemplifying how even things that are in reality can seem like they are in a dream. This may be about the “perfect moments” in life. Later on the poem goes to say, “That holy dream – That holy dream, While all the world were chiding.” In this section I feel like we discuss how the world, people in the world and society may frown upon our views and dreams. But as a person we still decide to continue on with our views and wants. Towards the end of the poem it is quoted, `What could be more purely bright, In Truth`s day-star?” To me this quote signifies the idea of truth and reality, and how the two interact. Moreover it describes how when we are having problems we regress into our dreams and away from reality, but when life is decent we progress from our dreams and into reality. The theme is clearly describing the idea of dreams, not only in the literal sense being that of when we sleep; but also the metaphoric way of life. There is personification, as he says “as a lovely beam,” we realize a beam of anything is not lovely as a beam or ray of light is an object. But Edgar gives it the emotion of a person which helps to describe the mood. In this poem the mood seems to sound joyful, but in a very dreary way. Poe discusses how dreams are wonderful and nice in contrast to reality, but he also makes the dreams sound like a punishment at times.
